| Other information: |
Their plane was shot down by fighters during Mission 216 to Steyr, Austria. The plane crashed at St. Valentin, Austria. The crew was originally a part of the Pomoroy Provisional Group. The Pomoroy Provisional Group had 490 crew members that served as replacement crews for various Bomb Groups in the 15th Air Force. The following is a statement of Lt David C. Burton on plane number 24. Mission dated: February 23, 1944. My waist gunner, Sgt Harold Furney, sighted a plane pull out of formation and was smoking. It went so far and nosed over in a vertical dive. Three chutes appeared to open and one was on fire. The co-pilot saw the same ship. It is believed to be Lt Chase and crew on Plane #33. |
